The Bastion Point Offshore Boat Ramp, located in Mallacoota in East Gippsland, is a two-lane concrete ramp with a central pontoon. Set against a stunning coastal backdrop, it’s a well-maintained facility and a key launching point for boaters heading out toward Gabo Island or offshore fishing grounds.
Conditions here can vary, so it’s best to check tide times before arriving. At high tide, beach access can be limited, and the ramp is occasionally prone to weed or sand build-up. While generally safe in most weather, the site is relatively exposed to the ocean, meaning a higher level of boating skill is often needed when navigating in and out, particularly with the Mallacoota sandbar limiting ocean access. Ongoing works on the rock wall breakwater (as of December 2024) mean one lane of the ramp may be closed.
Parking is one of the strong points at Bastion Point, with a large car park providing ample space for vehicles, trailers, and even caravans. Facilities include public toilets, though they are somewhat weathered and could use an upgrade. Dogs are allowed on leads but not permitted to roam freely on the beach.
Beyond boating, Bastion Point is a scenic place for a walk, with nearby beaches, rock pools, and lookout points offering sweeping views of the coastline. The surf is moderate and often suitable for a casual paddle, though conditions can change quickly. The surrounding waters and coastline are alive with wildlife. You can expect to spot dolphins, seals, or even whales offshore. Snorkelers will also find plenty to explore, from oysters and abalone to colourful marine life close to shore.
Easily accessible and right on the edge of town, Bastion Point combines practical facilities for boaters with the natural beauty Mallacoota is famous for, making it a popular stop for both locals and visitors.
