Tucked along the northwestern side of Lake Burley Griffin, Black Mountain Peninsula is a relaxed, family-friendly spot that’s easy to get to and perfect for a day outdoors. It’s got a calm, easygoing vibe that makes it great for all kinds of visitors.
There’s a small single-lane concrete boat ramp that’s perfect for launching non-powered watercraft like kayaks, canoes, paddle boats, or little sailing boats. From here, you get direct access to the peaceful Molonglo River. A wide path winds along the lake, making it an awesome trail for a scenic run or a relaxing stroll.
The area is also a bit of a playground for local wildlife. You’ll see black swans and their fluffy little cygnets gliding around, ducks waddling near the edge, and masked lapwings doing their thing. Keep an eye on the trees too: kookaburras, cockatoos, magpies, and strawneck ibises often make an appearance.
Whether you feel like swimming, paddling, or just walking along the shoreline, there’s plenty to enjoy. There are heaps of picnic spots, drinking fountains, and a playground that even includes a Liberty Swing, which caters to people with disabilities. Barbecue facilities mean you can easily make a day of it with lunch by the water.
In the summer months, the Canberra Aqua Park pops up nearby, which is a fun option if you're in the mood for something a bit more energetic. And if you're around early in the morning or late in the afternoon, you might spot the rowing crews out practising on the lake.
Whether you’re cycling, walking, bird-watching, or just kicking back, this place has something for everyone. It’s a really lovely spot to hang out with family and friends and soak up the beauty of Canberra’s lakeside landscape.
