The Bloomfield Boat Ramp, located near the Bloomfield River State School, provides access to one of Far North Queensland’s most scenic waterways. The site includes a single-lane concrete ramp with a small pontoon alongside, set on a picturesque stretch of river that’s popular for fishing and photography. Visitors should be mindful that this is crocodile country, which means swimming is prohibited, particularly near the ramp.
However, the area is a pleasant place to stop for a break or enjoy lunch by the river, taking in the peaceful surroundings. However, facilities are limited, with no amenities on site and only a small amount of parking available.
In early 2025, Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) confirmed plans to reinstate the Bloomfield River pontoon and boat ramp following significant damage caused by ex-Tropical Cyclone Jasper and the December 2023 floods. During the event, the pontoon was torn from its moorings and carried several kilometres downstream, eventually washing up on a nearby beach. The boat ramp also suffered severe damage when part of it collapsed into a scour hole, making the facility unsafe and unusable.
Reinstatement works will be carried out in two stages. Construction of a new pontoon is scheduled from late August to early October 2025, followed by an upgrade of the boat ramp from early October 2025 through to early February 2026. The project will deliver a new 15-metre aluminium pontoon capable of accommodating up to six dinghies, along with a four-metre-wide single-lane concrete ramp. Both structures are being purpose-designed to better withstand future extreme weather events.
Once complete, these upgrades will restore safe and reliable boating access to the Bloomfield River while preserving the natural appeal of this unique location.
