Corroboree Billabong in Marrakai is a super convenient spot for getting your boat in the water with ease. It’s part of the stunning Mary River system, a network of long, often connected waterholes and river stretches that break away from the Mary River Bridge Pool upstream and the freshwater side of Shady Camp downstream during the long Dry Season.
One of the best things about Corroboree is how close it is to Darwin, and the road access is solid, even when you're towing a boat.
The boat ramp here is a decent size, with two wide lanes and plenty of length, so launching even a bigger boat is no trouble at all. Since there’s no tidal movement in the billabong, you can launch at any time of day without stress. That said, if you're heading out during the Wet Season (October to April), keep an eye on the weather forecast; storms and squalls can pop up fast and turn things rough in no time. And of course, always stay croc-wise—this is croc country, after all.
The ramp got a facelift a few years back, too. They replaced a damaged section of concrete matting and laid down fresh concrete on the lower part of the ramp. The result? A safer, smoother launch for fishos and boaters alike.
Parking’s pretty decent here as well; there’s a spacious lot that fits more than ten cars and trailers.
Just next to the car park, you’ll find a tour operator who runs cruises through the billabong. Their jetty is right there, so it's easy to hop on board. And if you’re planning an overnight adventure, you can even rent a houseboat.
Corroboree Billabong is hands-down one of the Top End’s most iconic spots for chasing barramundi. It’s also a stunning tropical wetland teeming with birdlife, wildlife, and yes, plenty of saltwater crocodiles. If you're into fishing, nature, or just want to see the wild beauty of the Northern Territory, Corroboree is a must-visit.
