The Cronulla Boat Ramp, located on Tonkin Street near the Cronulla Wharf, ferry terminal, and the marina, features a dual-lane concrete ramp with a pontoon that provides access to the waters of Port Hacking. The ramp offers a generous turning area, making it convenient for boat owners, and it’s also a practical launch point for kayaks, with enough space on the side to set up or slip in beside the main lanes.
While the ramp sees regular use at high tide, it’s important to note that the area becomes very shallow during low tide. Many boaters report having to drop their trailers off the end of the ramp or drag vessels across mud before they reach deeper water. Retrieving boats can also be tricky, so extra care with depth and trailer positioning is advised.
Several users have pointed out that the ramp is in need of significant upgrades. The gradient isn’t ideal, especially for skid trailers, and the side gutters that are meant to guide and prevent vehicles from slipping over the edge have deteriorated over time. With no sand or suitable area for jet ski docking, it’s not the most forgiving spot for PWCs either.
Parking is another challenge. Trailer parking is limited, and it’s common for boaters to launch only to discover there’s nowhere to park. Spaces designated for trailers often fill quickly, sometimes with vehicles that aren’t towing. Public toilets are available nearby, and the adjoining beach area offers shelters and BBQ facilities, though these also get busy on weekends.
Overall, the location is scenic and convenient, but users should plan ahead for tide conditions, parking availability, and the ramp’s current condition.
