Kookaburra Park-West, located in Karana Downs in Brisbane, is a quiet and well-equipped spot ideal for a family day out, a casual boating trip, or a bit of fishing along the Brisbane River.
The park features a single-lane concrete boat ramp that is well-angled, solid underfoot, and easy to launch from, offering direct access to the river and lovely views across the water.
The area around the ramp has plenty of open space on both sides, making it easy to beach your boat if needed. While there's no jetty, launching is generally straightforward. Just be mindful of the rocky bottom (fibreglass boats may need extra care), and it's a good idea to wear shoes on the ramp, as stray fishing hooks have been known to turn up. One drawback is that the ramp can be prone to flooding during heavy rain periods.
There’s ample sealed parking available for both cars and trailers, so access and manoeuvring are rarely an issue. The park also offers a range of amenities, including toilets, BBQ areas, sheltered seating, a kids’ play area, walking tracks, bins, and a fish-cleaning (filleting) table. A dedicated fishing platform is also available.
Fishing here is popular, with catfish and bream being common catches, and there are even reports of bull sharks making their way through this stretch of river. It’s a recommended spot for land-based or small-boat fishing.
The atmosphere is relaxed, and visitors often enjoy taking a small boat out for a quick spin. It’s also a nice spot for a picnic lunch or some light water activities, with a friendly, easygoing vibe around the park.
