Located at the end of Johnston Street beside the Recreation Ground, the Lake Cargelligo Boat Ramp provides straightforward access to the waters of Lake Cargelligo via a simple single-lane concrete ramp. It’s a practical launch spot for locals and visitors alike, with a relaxed lakeside setting that suits both boating and fishing trips.

Just a few metres from the ramp is a pontoon commonly used by land-based anglers, while a nearby fish cleaning station adds extra convenience for those spending the day on the water. On the opposite side of the ramp, a sandy beach offers an easy spot to relax or enjoy the lake views.

Public toilets, a children’s playground, the local sailing club headquarters, and the State Emergency Service facilities are all located close by, making the area well-equipped for families and recreational users.

The lake itself features two boat ramps (another public boat ramp can also be found nearby at the end of Bogan Street) and plenty of accessible shoreline for bank fishing. Large sections of the water contain submerged timber and old tree stumps, creating excellent fish habitat and plenty of productive fishing locations. Trolling and bait fishing along the eastern side of the lake are particularly popular and regularly produce solid catches.

Lake Cargelligo is widely regarded as one of the best fishing destinations in the Lachlan Valley, with spring, summer, and autumn generally considered the prime seasons. Popular fishing methods include trolling, lure casting, and bait fishing, with anglers commonly targeting yellowbelly, redfin, and Murray cod. In recent years, several fish stocking programs have further improved fishing opportunities, including releases of yellowbelly and silver perch.

Adjacent to the main lake is Lake Curlew, connected by a channel and also known for its productive fishing grounds, especially around drowned timber and overhanging willow trees. Beyond fishing, Lake Cargelligo is also a recognised birdwatching destination, with around 230 bird species recorded throughout the area. The region’s diverse wetland systems, along with nearby Mallee habitats such as Round Hill and Nombinnie Nature Reserves, contribute to the impressive variety of birdlife found around the lake.
