Located along New Entrance Road in South West Rocks, Matty’s Flat Boat Ramp is a popular launching point for boaters looking to explore the Macleay River. The facility features a two-lane concrete boat ramp with a central pontoon, providing convenient access to deep water and some of the region’s well-known fishing spots. However, boaters should also take care when launching, as the concrete surface can become slippery underfoot and the river current can be strong at times.
As one of the busiest boating facilities in the region, Matty's Flat Reserve is well-equipped to accommodate a variety of vessels. Amenities include a fish cleaning station, a boat wash area, toilets, picnic tables and benches, and a playground for kids. The area also offers ample parking for vehicles and boat trailers. However, it can become extremely busy during weekends, holidays, and peak fishing seasons, leading to quickly filled parking spaces.
To address these issues, Kempsey Shire Council has secured funding through the NSW Government’s Boating Infrastructure for Communities Program to carry out a major upgrade of Matty's Flat Reserve and its boating facilities.
The planned improvements will significantly enhance both functionality and accessibility. Upgrades include better traffic flow, expanded parking with additional accessible spaces and rigging bays, a new four-lane boat ramp with an access pontoon to better accommodate peak demand, and improved facilities for individuals with limited mobility. The project will also introduce wheelchair-accessible fishing platforms, upgraded picnic areas, a modern amenities building, an all-abilities playground, and improved landscaping with connected pathways and boardwalks.
Once completed, these upgrades will further establish Matty's Flat as a premier boating and recreational destination on the Macleay River.
