The Mungo Brush Boat Ramp, located within the well-known Mungo Brush Campground, offers a simple yet reliable launch point into Blackfellows Bay, with direct access out to Boolambayte Lake. The single-lane concrete ramp is in good condition and provides easy launching for smaller boats, kayaks, and canoes, although there’s no jetty alongside it.

From here, paddlers and boaters can also enjoy scenic trips along the lower Myall River toward Hawks Nest, making it a great starting point for a relaxed day on the water. The lake itself is shallow, generally around 3 to 4 metres, making it well-suited to a range of water activities, including kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, wakeboarding, and towing inflatables. Anglers will also find decent fishing, particularly closer to the river mouth, where tidal flow improves, with species like flathead, bream, and whiting commonly targeted.

There is designated parking for boat trailers within the campground, along with a boat-free swimming zone for those looking to cool off safely. Just a short walk from the campground brings you to the ocean beach, where surf fishing can be excellent if you can spot the deeper gutters.

The campground itself is a popular and well-maintained spot, offering a relaxed, social atmosphere. Campsites are unpowered but clearly marked, catering to tents, camper trailers, caravans, and campervans. Facilities include non-flush (composting) toilets, picnic tables, barbecue areas, and rubbish and recycling bins. While there’s no drinking water available, the amenities are cleaned regularly and generally well looked after.

Visitors often gather along the lake’s edge in the evenings to unwind and take in the sunset, creating a friendly, communal feel. Wildlife is also part of the experience, with sightings of reptiles, birdlife, and occasionally dingoes adding to the natural setting. The nearby rainforest walks, including the Mungo Rainforest Walk and tracks leading toward Tamboi, offer a great way to explore the area on foot.

Access to the area requires a National Parks pass or entry fee, as it sits within Myall Lakes National Park.

Overall, Mungo Brush is a peaceful and scenic destination that combines easy boating access with a laid-back camping experience. Whether you’re launching a kayak, fishing the lake, or simply relaxing by the water, it’s a spot that offers a little bit of everything; best enjoyed with a good level of preparation, especially when it comes to water supply and mosquito protection.
