The Newell Beach Ramp
tucked away at 32 Rankin Street in Newell, is a top spot for boaters looking to
explore the estuaries, nearby Daintree River, or head out towards Snapper
Island. It’s a fishing hotspot; just
make sure you stay croc-wise because you're in croc country up here.
The ramp recently got
a much-needed upgrade. The old design was tricky, especially for those with
larger boats trying to launch at low tide. Now, the ramp sports a fresh
two-lane concrete setup with a central fixed walkway and even a dedicated
fishing platform. It’s ideal for boats up to 16ft and gives access to the
Mossman River. Plus, being so close to the river mouth makes it a breeze to get
to the inshore and outer reefs. One of the best things? The updated design
means you don’t need to get your feet wet as you can berth at any tide
level.
Water visibility is
usually good unless there’s been a big downpour, and if you're launching on a
lower tide, turn left just after the river mouth and head north for a few
hundred metres since that’s where the deepest water is.
There’s plenty of
space for parking, and there’s even a tap on-site, though you’ll
need to bring your own hose and fittings if you want a rinse-off. The
area is not only great for fishing but also perfect for birdwatching,
and if you’re lucky, you might even spot a big croc cruising by. Just
don’t forget the insect repellent; the sandflies can get a bit annoying.
Planning to stick
around for a while? You’re in luck. There’s a local caravan park, a handy
convenience store, and even some beachside holiday homes if you want
to turn your boating trip into a relaxing coastal getaway. Whether you’re
fishing, exploring, or just soaking up the peaceful vibes, Newell Beach Ramp is
a solid launchpad for your next adventure.
