The Opossum Bay Boat Ramp and Jetty, located on Pier Road in Opossum Bay, just a 30-minute drive from Hobart, features a single-lane concrete ramp alongside a sturdy jetty with a lower landing platform. The ramp is accessible at all tides but can be exposed to westerly and northerly winds. An aluminium walkway links the concrete approach to the jetty head, which is fitted with a blue navigation light for visibility after dark.
Parking is available just a few metres from the jetty, with a grassy reserve nearby offering shaded picnic tables and public toilets. A small general store up the road serves ice creams and coffee, making it a convenient stop for boaters and families alike. The sheltered sandy beach beside the jetty is perfect for a paddle or swim, and there’s even a fish and chip shop close by for a relaxed meal by the water.
The jetty shows the charm of the Tasmanian coast. Wooden planks extend into the calm, blue waters of the Derwent River, where small fish swim near the surface and seagulls fly above. From the end of the jetty, you can see great views of Mount Wellington and the hills of South Arm. Locals often fish for flathead or squid, while kids jump into the water from the low rail at high tide.
The area can get breezy, so it’s wise to bring a jacket, and note that nearby facilities close early. Whether you’re launching a boat, casting a line, or simply unwinding as the sun sets over the Derwent, Opossum Bay Jetty offers a peaceful, picture-perfect spot to enjoy Tasmania’s coastline.
