Port Hinchinbrook Boat Ramp

The Port Hinchinbrook Public Boat Ramp, located in the coastal town of Cardwell in the Cassowary Coast region, is a two-lane concrete ramp with a central pontoon, providing access to the Hinchinbrook Channel. While it offers a convenient launch point into one of North Queensland’s most remarkable waterways, it has long faced challenges due to silt build-up.

At low tide, launching is near impossible, which can be frustrating for regular users and concerning in emergencies. For the ramp to serve its purpose year-round, regular dredging is essential.

When the tide is high, the facility performs well and provides smooth access to the channel. However, below a tide level of about 1.5 metres, boating options are very limited. This makes the ramp highly tide-dependent, reducing its practicality for locals and visitors alike.

To address this, the ramp, along with its public toilets and bins, has been temporarily closed in January 2025 for dredging works. Once completed, the upgrade should improve reliability and usability for the community and travellers heading out to explore Hinchinbrook’s natural beauty.

The site itself has good infrastructure, with ample car and trailer parking, toilets, and waste bins. While a wash-down bay would be a welcome addition, boaters still find the facilities convenient. The pontoon is particularly useful, and nearby services offer bait, fuel, ice, tackle, and friendly local advice, handy for anyone unfamiliar with the area.

A word of caution: this is crocodile country. Staying alert around the water’s edge is a must. Despite its current limitations, the Port Hinchinbrook Boat Ramp remains an important northern gateway to the Hinchinbrook Channel.

With dredging underway, it has the potential to become a far more reliable launch point for both locals and visitors eager to experience the region’s world-class fishing, boating, and natural scenery.
