The Proserpine Boat Ramp, tucked away in Conway in the Whitsundays, is a pretty solid spot if you're looking to get out on the water. It’s got a good concrete ramp with two lanes, plus a handy floating pontoon right next to it. That pontoon makes it a lot easier to hop on and off your boat; and if it’s not too busy, it’s also a decent place to cast a line for a bit of land-based fishing. The ramp leads straight out toward the mouth of the Proserpine River, making it a convenient launch point.
That said, it’s worth keeping an eye on the tide and weather. Bigger boats can be a bit of a hassle here if there’s a strong cross current or the wind picks up — things can get dicey fast on big tides or gusty days. It’s not the kind of place where you want to rush or take chances.
Parking won’t be an issue since the car park is massive, with space for over 50 vehicles and trailers. However, just don’t expect any bells and whistles; there aren’t any amenities nearby, so plan ahead if you need bathrooms or supplies.
The surroundings are stunning, and the area can be fantastic for fishing, especially when the water’s calm. But, and this is a big but, you need to be croc-wise. Warning signs are posted for a reason. A 4.5-meter estuarine crocodile was recently caught in a trap not far from the ramp. It’s not just about keeping your distance either; it’s illegal (and dangerous) to bait or lure crocs, so don’t even think of doing it. It puts both people and the crocs at risk.
If you’re bringing kids, keep them close and don’t let them wander near the water’s edge. The same goes for adults; stay well back, especially in the early morning or late evening when crocs are more active.
All in all, the Proserpine Boat Ramp is a great launch point if you’re smart, cautious, and respectful of the wildlife.
