The Russell Island Boat Ramp on Wahine Drive is a solid, well-built two-lane concrete ramp that gives you easy access to the calm waters between Russell and North Stradbroke Islands. It’s a deep-water ramp that makes launching a breeze, especially with those gorgeous views adding to the experience. The area is pretty sheltered too, so it's a great spot to take your boat out for a relaxing day on the water.
The ramp itself is in good condition, with plenty of cleats to tie off a few boats at once, though it could definitely benefit from a wharf or pontoon to make tying up even easier. It’s perfect for launching smaller boats, and even larger vessels too, but that part’s still a bit uncertain.
The water here is super calm, making it a great spot for mooring or just floating around stress-free.
There’s good news for locals and regulars: the boat ramp is getting an upgrade! A floating walkway is currently in the works and should be ready by mid-2025, with work already underway as of August 2024. That’ll definitely make things more convenient for loading and unloading.
One thing the area could use more of is parking; while it can have enough space on weekdays — it can get a bit tight on busy days.
Unfortunately, there aren't any other amenities available here, only some rubbish bins. While it’s a fantastic spot for launching and mooring, it’s not ideal for swimming due to the presence of diesel, oil, and ferry traffic nearby. So maybe save the dip for another beach.
Overall, the Wahine Drive ramp is a great launching point with peaceful waters and beautiful scenery; and it’s only going to get better once the new walkway is in place.
