Saltwater Arm boat ramp is a solid launch spot about 17 km off Gunn Point Road, with the turn-off sitting roughly 2 km before you hit the Leaders Creek ramp. It opens up access to the Adelaide River system, just 60 km east of Darwin, which makes it a favourite among local fishermen. Thanks to its location, it’s super popular, especially during the wet season when the run-off fishing near the river mouth can be seriously impressive.
The ramp itself is a single lane and usable at a 2.8m low tide. A quick heads-up: there’s a rock bar just downstream, so when you’re heading out, keep right of centre.
Getting to the ramp during the wet season can be tricky. The road is unsealed, and heavy rain can turn it into a slippery mess, sometimes even making it impassable. So, if it’s been raining hard, it’s a good idea to check the conditions before you make the trip.
There’s a good amount of space to park your car and trailer, but here’s the thing: there have been reports of vandalism in the area, so take extra care. Lock up, hide your valuables, and if you’ve got security gear like wheel locks or dash cams or car covers, now’s the time to use them.
There are no toilets, bins, or other facilities at the ramp, so pack everything you’ll need for the day. That includes your fishing gear, food, water, and anything else to keep you comfortable and safe. Despite the lack of amenities, the access to great fishing and the natural beauty of the area make Saltwater Arm a go-to spot; just be sure to go in prepared with your essentials and security equipment and stay aware of your surroundings.
