Nestled near Tamworth, Split Rock Dam is a favourite inland destination for boating, fishing, camping, and outdoor recreation. The dam plays an important role in supplying water to the Namoi Valley for irrigation, environmental flows, livestock, industry, and households, while also offering visitors a scenic setting to enjoy a wide range of activities throughout the year.
The main boat ramp features a single-lane concrete launch that provides access to the Manilla River and the expansive waters of Split Rock Dam. A large gravel parking area offers plenty of room for vehicles and boat trailers, making launching and retrieving your boat convenient.
Visitors can enjoy boating, water skiing, jet skiing, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, or simply paddling at a leisurely pace while taking in the peaceful surroundings. The dam is also a popular spot for birdwatching, bushwalking, picnicking, and relaxing by the water.
Camping facilities cater to a range of visitors, with unpowered lakeside camping and sheltered picnic tables available along the foreshores. The main campground, located around one kilometre north of the dam wall on the western foreshore, offers both powered and unpowered sites, as well as wood-fired barbecues, picnic shelters, toilets, showers, and a fish cleaning station.
While there isn't a general store on-site, the campground provides the essential amenities needed for a comfortable stay.
Fishing is one of Split Rock Dam's biggest drawcards, with anglers regularly targeting Murray cod, golden perch (yellowbelly), and silver perch. Catfish and carp are also commonly found, making it a rewarding destination for both experienced fishers and those looking to cast a line for the first time.
With its beautiful lake views, spacious camping areas, and excellent boating and fishing opportunities, Split Rock Dam is a fantastic destination for anyone looking to experience the natural beauty of the Tamworth region.
