Stockton Lake Campground Boat Ramp

Located about seven kilometres east of Collie, just off the Piavanini Road, Stockton Lake is an artificial lake formed from a former open-cut coal mine. Over time, this once-industrial site has transformed into a popular recreation and camping area, surrounded by natural bushland and shaded by established trees.

The lake’s striking aqua-blue water is a drawcard for visitors, particularly those interested in boating and water skiing. However, the boat launching facilities are limited. There’s no formal boat ramp, and the area commonly used for launching is often obstructed by campers. Boaters typically find alternative access points, but should take care, rocks line much of the shoreline.

The campground itself offers basic amenities, including toilets. While there are no marked individual campsites, the space can accommodate groups, families, or solo campers. The area has a relaxed, bush-style atmosphere with minimal development. Campfires are permitted from April to November when conditions allow, but only within the designated fire rings. Visitors must bring their own firewood, as collecting wood from the area is not allowed.

Camping is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and fees are collected daily in cash—correct change is required, as no change is given. Rangers visit regularly to ensure conditions are maintained. Swimming is allowed, though visitors should be cautious. The water is mildly acidic due to the site’s mining history and can be cold and unexpectedly deep close to shore. Those with sensitive skin are advised to limit contact. Submerged rocks can also pose a risk, so diving and jumping are not recommended. As always, swimming in inland waters carries certain risks, and it's best to follow health department advice for safe swimming.

The campground is dog-friendly, but pets must remain on a leash and under control at all times. Birdlife is abundant, particularly around dawn and dusk, adding to the natural charm of the area. While it’s a peaceful location overall, it can get busy and a little noisy on weekends, especially due to the nearby motocross track.

There are no dedicated cooking facilities on site, so campers should come prepared with their own equipment. Despite the few limitations, Stockton Lake remains a picturesque and convenient spot for bush-style camping, with quick access to the nearby town of Collie.
