If you’re after a relaxing riverside getaway, Swifts Creek Campground is a fantastic spot to settle in for a night or two. Located at the narrowest stretch of the Murray River, known locally as “The Narrows,” the campground is surrounded by beautiful river red gum forest and makes an excellent base for exploring the nearby Murray Valley National Park.
The campground’s simple single-lane concrete boat ramp provides easy access for boats, kayaks, and canoes, making it simple to get out on the water.
It’s a great spot for fishing, paddling, or simply enjoying the peaceful river environment shared with native birdlife, wetland species, and the occasional koala resting in the surrounding trees.
Visitors regularly praise the area for its spacious layout, easy vehicle access, and excellent fishing opportunities. The campground features plenty of flat, open sites suitable for tents, camper trailers, caravans, or camping beside your vehicle. Most vehicles can comfortably reach the site via the dirt access roads, so a 4WD generally isn’t necessary.
Facilities are simple but well-maintained, including clean long-drop toilets, picnic tables, sheltered areas, and gas BBQ facilities. While some BBQs may still be affected by previous flood damage, the campground remains a popular and well-kept destination supported by park rangers.
There are a few things worth preparing for before arriving. Camping permits must be booked in advance, as there’s little to no internet service in the area. Drinking water is limited or unavailable, so visitors should bring their own water supply along with cooking equipment such as gas or fuel stoves, particularly during fire season. Bringing your own firewood is also recommended.
Whether you’re fishing from the riverbank, launching the boat, kayaking through the Murray, or simply relaxing by camp surrounded by abundant birdlife, Swifts Creek Campground offers a laid-back outdoor escape with plenty to see and do.
