Set along Kosciuszko Road near the sailing club headquarters, the Claypits Boat Ramp offers something a little different from a typical launching site. Rather than a concrete ramp, this spot features a sandy, vehicle-accessible beach that provides easy entry into the cool, clear waters of Lake Jindabyne, where the lake connects with the Snowy River system.

The beach area is spacious and convenient, making it a popular place for locals and visitors to launch small boats or simply relax by the water. With plenty of room to park along the shoreline, it’s an easy place to pull up, take in the scenery, and enjoy the calm lakeside atmosphere. Four-wheel-drive access adds to the appeal, allowing visitors to drive onto the sand and relax by the water.

Facilities at the site are another highlight. The public toilets are frequently praised for their cleanliness and upkeep by visitors. Free parking is available along the beach, making it easy for visitors to park their 4WD vehicles on the beach, unwind by the lakeside, and watch the sun set across the water.

While AWD vehicles can manage in most conditions, a vehicle with higher clearance is generally recommended to avoid scraping on uneven sections.

Claypits is also known as a great spot to spend time outdoors. The views over the lake are particularly impressive, especially in the early morning or during the quieter winter months when the landscape feels especially peaceful.

During the summer, the area becomes a favourite place for a swim. The water is often described as clear and refreshing, with plenty of open space to enjoy a dip. The gentle beach entry and designated swimming areas make it a safe and welcoming place for families, and there’s even a playground nearby for younger children.

For those who enjoy exploring on foot, Claypits is also a pleasant starting point for a lakeside walk, and at night the open surroundings make it a good place to look up and enjoy the stars.

Whether you’re launching a small boat, going for a swim, enjoying a relaxed sunset by the water, or simply taking in the beautiful alpine scenery, Claypits offers a simple but memorable lakeside experience on the shores of Lake Jindabyne.
