Located about 20 kilometres south of Deloraine, Huntsman Lake is a peaceful, scenic spot nestled in Meander. The lake features a single-lane concrete boat ramp, near the Dam Wall, perfect for small boats, with access limited to day use only as gates close at sunset.
The lake is relatively sheltered, making it ideal for boating, kayaking, and fishing. A 5-knot speed limit applies across the entire lake, helping maintain a calm and safe environment for all users. Boaters should keep an eye on water levels, as these can fluctuate; when the lake is low, the ramp can drop off steeply, and underwater hazards may be present. Navigation is also restricted within 200 metres of the dam wall.
In July 2024, a major boat ramp renewal and upgrade was completed, including the construction of a 70-metre jetty beside the ramp. The new jetty enhances safety and accessibility, making it easier for families, seniors, and those with limited mobility to enjoy time on the water. It’s also popular with kayakers and others enjoying passive water sports.
Formed in 2007 by the damming of the Meander River for irrigation and power generation, Huntsman Lake has since become a favourite among Tasmanian anglers. The lake supports healthy populations of brown and rainbow trout. Fishing is permitted year-round using bait, lure, or fly, and the rising water levels after rainfall make for rewarding catches close to the flooded edges.
The lake is managed by Tasmanian Irrigation and offers two well-developed day-use areas with picnic shelters, BBQ facilities, and public toilets: one near the Dam Wall boat ramp and another at the designated picnic area. It’s a peaceful place for a picnic, a quiet day of fishing, or simply to enjoy the views.
