Johnston Boat Ramp

The Johnston Street Boat Ramp is located within Keanes Point Reserve in Peppermint Grove, a western suburb of Perth. This single-lane concrete ramp provides direct access to Freshwater Bay and is best suited for small aluminium boats under 5 metres in length. Caution is advised when using the ramp... it ends abruptly with a drop-off into sand, followed by a very shallow stretch extending about 50 metres.

Boaters often need to push their vessel into deeper water. Heavier boats may struggle on retrieval, and a 4WD is recommended, as two-wheel drives are likely to lose traction on the way back up the ramp. And there’s no jetty for mooring; you’ll need to bring your boat up onto the adjacent sand.

That said, the location is well sheltered from prevailing westerly sea breezes, which makes it a calm spot for launching. The area is also home to many moored sailboats, benefiting from the natural protection. While the ramp is conveniently placed and offers pleasant views along the Swan River, it comes with a few limitations. On-site parking for vehicles and trailers is minimal. However, there is usually plenty of kerbside parking a short walk away near the reserve.

The surroundings are peaceful, with sandy beaches on either side of the ramp. Facilities in the area include a children's playground, barbecue stations, public toilets, and a café located just a few hundred metres from the ramp; ideal for a relaxed day by the water.
