The Penneshaw Boat Ramp, also called Christmas Cove Boat Ramp, located at Christmas Cove on Kangaroo Island, provides essential boating access to Backstairs Passage and surrounding waters. This facility features a concrete dual-lane ramp, making it suitable for launching small to medium-sized vessels.

Multiple mooring pontoons are available, two adjacent to the ramps, while another one is located a few steps from the ramp. A few boats are moored here, along with the KI Ocean Safari crew.

The 300 metre long high tide beach curves around the shore of the very protected, almost circular bay, surrounded by 20 metre high bluffs. The ramp is protected by a breakwater, ensuring calmer waters for launching, though conditions can be affected by strong northerly winds. Boaters should be mindful of tidal and weather conditions, as strong winds can make launching and retrieval challenging.

Access to the ramp requires a launching fee, which can be paid at a self-registration booth or through electronic payment systems. The Kangaroo Island Council offers various permit options, including short-term, annual, and lifetime permits.

The parking area is spacious and includes designated spots for both cars and trailers.

The area, unfortunately, has no convenient facilities available. Meaning there is no power, showers, toilets, potable water or fuel available. However, visitors can find accommodation, cafes, and general stores nearby, ensuring easy access to supplies before or after a trip.

The ramp is also a popular launching point for fishing charters and recreational boaters looking to explore Kangaroo Island’s coastal waters. Given its strategic location near Backstairs Passage, the ramp provides access to deep-sea fishing areas, making it a prime spot for anglers targeting species such as snapper and kingfish.
