The Umbakumba boat ramp, found in the laid-back community of Umbakumba on Groote Eylandt, is a straightforward single-lane concrete ramp that gives you direct access to the open ocean. It’s a decent ramp overall, though every now and then it could use a bit of tidying up. Don’t be surprised if you see some larger boats pulling up and docking right at the ramp; it’s a shared space that gets its fair share of action.
It’s also a really scenic spot to hang out. Whether you’re into fishing, beach walks, or just soaking in the views, you’ll find plenty to enjoy here. There are shaded areas where you can kick back, have a snack, or simply chill out and take in the peaceful surroundings.
That said, this is serious croc country. There have been sightings of a big saltie in the area, so it's absolutely vital to stay crocwise. Keep at least five metres from the water’s edge, and whatever you do, don’t clean your fish or toss scraps nearby. The smell can lure crocodiles in closer than you'd like.
Parking isn’t a hassle either; there’s plenty of space for your vehicle and trailer. And if you need to grab a cold drink, some bait, or a bite to eat, you’ll find a mini mart just a short drive back toward the main road. Handy and convenient, especially if you forgot to pack something.
All in all, it’s a great launching point for an adventure; just be safe, be smart, and enjoy the best of what the coastline has to offer.
