The Woods Lake Boat Ramp, located at Woods Lake in Steppes, features a single-lane concrete ramp alongside a wide gravel launching area divided by a central breakwater. A white navigation light on the shore between the ramp and the launch zone helps guide boaters during low-light conditions. It’s best suited for 4WD vehicles, especially when towing, as the gravel surface and occasional soft patches can make launching tricky. While generally reliable, the ramp can experience some wave action in strong winds. There is a dedicated parking area for cars and trailers across the ramp.

Woods Lake is a popular destination for anglers, known for its healthy population of brown trout that can be caught both from the shore and by boat. The lake is typically more sheltered than the nearby highland waters, though conditions can turn rough during sudden weather changes. At times of low water, large sections of the lake become shallow and weedy, with submerged hazards that require careful navigation. Boaters are encouraged to practice minimal-impact boating.

Formed by the damming of the Lake River, Woods Lake helps maintain downstream flows during summer and autumn. Its milky waters can become turbid after periods of strong wind, but it remains a rewarding spot for fishing throughout much of the year. Anglers can enjoy fly fishing, bait fishing, trolling, and lure casting, with the best conditions typically found in the early and late seasons.

Camping is allowed along the lakeshore on the Permanent Timber Production Zone and Crown Land between the ramp and dam wall, as well as on the eastern shore. There are no formal facilities, so campers should come prepared with their own gear, including a portable toilet. For those without one, it’s important to walk at least 100 metres from the water and properly bury all waste to keep the area clean and natural.

With its peaceful surroundings, accessible launch area, and reliable fishing, Woods Lake is a simple yet rewarding spot for those seeking a quiet escape on the water.
